Alpha Phi's Omega Chapter: An Incredible Story
The Omega chapter of Alpha Phi began with a suggestion. Two students of the University of Texas at Austin, Mab Harrison and Jesse Mary Hill, were about to be initiated as the founders of the Texas chapter of Theta Sigma Phi when they were encouraged to organize a group and find a chapter of a national sorority.
Mrs. Neil Carothers, Director of the Woman's building at the University, supported the girls in their decision to do so and held a midnight conference with them to discuss the attributes of each existing sorority. It was Mrs. Carothers who suggested Alpha Phi at that fateful conference on May 17, 1919.
Mab Harrison and Jesse Mary Hill began organizing their group immediately under the name Delta Alpha. By May 1919, Florence Malone, Katharine Fischer, Lola Greer and Gladys Flamson were also initiated into Delta Alpha, bringing the total to six. These members met secretly in the Woman's Building until the end of the semester.
